Thought I would post this portrait I did in class last week-it really looks like Larry-who I have drawn many times before in other classes-still working on my self portait which doesn't even remotely look me yet-jonathan's self portrait is much better-but he is still working on his, too-we'll have a group reveal soon!

Hope everyone had a good thanksgiving - I took some time off from my studio-but have been working on paintings for my class-The anterior/front view of "Jo" is just about done except for the hair-not sure about the Left arm-the posterior/back view is still a work in progress-also working on a self portrait for class-but alas I have a cold and I don't feel like working on anything at the moment! Oh and Jonathan made a "cajum spiced braid" for his "salon" at school.-Looks good!

As promised-the assignment I did for my drawing class-"tangerine/blue plate special"-which I just framed for the foundation contest at the school-and the update on white tulips-finally doing the green-usually I can't wait to finish doing green-but after all the petals that are not really white-it is nice to do the stems and leaves-

Getting there-slowly but surely! Went to my first Bon Air Artists meeting-A local artist showed how she travels light to europe and mexico and brings her painting supplies-lovely pics of italy -

Entered my homework assignment in a Foundation Award contest at JTCC-I meant to take a picture before I handed it in-oh-well, next week I'll get it back and show you my "tangerine/blue plate special". Jonathan did a small study for his portfolio-finally willing to try pastel-plenty of them around to try! and I am plugging away on my white flowers, petal by petal-glad it is the last of the series, but I actually enjoy the unfolding of a painting bit by bit. So, the slice of tangerine is Jonathan's and the flowers are mine!

We had our exhibition opening at the Virginia Museum School last week-I had my own room-and it was where they put the food, so lots of folks saw the four paintings that I had up- Friends came to share in the festivities, and Gary came up from FL- the school did a nice job on the show, sorry I forgot to take pictures-next time!

Working the last of the flower paintings from the series I started this summer-no daffodils in this one, but alot of white-which really isn't white! Keeping busy with homework, too.

Trying to finish paintings for framing this month-critically looking at what I have worked on the past few months and trying to correct the things I feel don't work. I am going to have to stop soon and just frame things before I go crazy!!!!! Happy New Year!

Couldn't find my camera as Sam has become video man for his friends on their skateboards-brought it today so I could update-forgot to photo the one I really meant to include-will do it tomorrow- I have been working on trees-did finish the forest walk at sunset with help from a fellow pastel painter-she was able to see what was wrong-so hopefully that is closer to done-

I have been working on a photo of red trees I took last fall at the botanical gardens-did a study and trying to work on watercolor paper that I have and did a watercolor underpainting as well-might as well use what I have - so -not sure if I like the effect -any comments welcome-

Also revising sam and spike at the river now that the show is over-took it out of the frame and trying to improve the proportions for sam and spike and lighten up spike to make the image read more true-may bring this to class and ask my teacher for suggestions next week.

Next up is framing what I did this summer and trying to sell them......

Spike and sam are framed and up in the members show at art works-the small pic of spike is up in the dog and cats show downstairs-I still need to work on sam and spike but I am glad it got up anyway-I am still playing with the last daffodil-not happy with the background-I have my "plein air" stuff all set up now-decided to stick with my old french easel and bought a small folding hand truck to lug it around and converted my drawer to a pastel holder-filled with an assortment of pastels and I am ready! So of course, it rained all week-oh well-fall is coming -it will be great to go out and paint! I am working on a painting from a photo I took on our nightly walk at the school with spike-the sun was setting and it illuminated the trees and the ground with gold -I did a few drawings, and a small 5x7 study and today started the larger work- I need to think a bit more about my color choices on this before I do much more! Signed up for a course at the community college-drawing and pastel-3 credits towards what I don't know .... better get my homework done!

Spike is framed and ready for the cats and dogs show-Sam and Spike at the river is done!!!yeah and I have most of the frame curtesy of Bill's trip to the beach today-they have a big art store out there so I could get the parts (except the glass) without paying shipping-going to frame it tomorrow and hopefully I will like how I am going to frame it! working on another daffodil for the series and bill got some "Plein air" frames for me try with the paintings I finished on the boards earlier this summer-My next goal is to start working on some paintings outdoors!

Sam and spike at the river - Next time I try to use gesso and pumice on watercolor paper I will know that I need to mount the paper on a hard surface before I start-I had a great deal of difficulty getting the pastel to stay on the surface (and it made a great deal of dust while I worked)due to the fact that the surface was not flat and very rough-so before I used up all my Rembrants I decided to start over. I also needed a better drawing of Sam and Spike-the last one was never correct and drove me crazy!-SO armed with all I learned from the first attempt, I started another painting on Wallis 30X 24 -Did a gouache underpainting and now I am working in Rembrandts to lay down the basic background. Had to quit early this week to pick up Connor-yes you may feel guilty Kim- so to be continued!!!

back from Florida-back to work! We have a show in August "cats and dogs" at art works and it is to raise money for the ASPCA-all work must have dogs (or cats) - so with that in mind i started work on two pictures of Spike-one with Sam and one close up-still in progress but thought I would post my progress. Also started another daffodil for my series on ampersand boards-so, busy, busy!

Happy Birthday!

Well I have been busy working on this painting since last week-still not totally finished-but all the components are there-just need to work on details-I think it is the beginning of a series!-Happy birthday, bro- you will have to come up to VA to get it, however-I will frame it for you in the meantime! see you soon-

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Ah-what to do next! I want to do a picture for the august dog/cat show at art works - I think I may do a pic of Sam holding Spike at the river-it has water with nice reflections in the background-so, started to do some sketches for that -

also, had a 5x7 sample of gatorboard floating around, so I am doing a small picture to try it out-not used to working so small!

Saturday, July 12, 2008

I think it is done-signed it anyway-maybe a few little things but for the most part I am happy at the place it is!

Friday, July 11, 2008

Today I worked my way down to the foreground of the painting-Using primarily Rembrants and a few softer pastels from dark unison set, mount vision and senneliers. I have a few things to still resolve but I am happy with the result so far. I found the sketch I made at the time and it was from Boscebel looking out over the Hudson towards West Point-Ann did remember, too.! The two last images are closeups of the left and center of the work. Hope to finish tomorrow!

Underpainted the landscape I sketched out yesterday using nupastel and turpenoid using complimentary colors. This is Wallis sanded paper-the image is about 20 x 36 . Using a limited palate of pinks, blues, violets, worked in sky and distance mountains, Started with lightest value colors and progressed up the scale in more proximal mountain ranges adding greens, golds, reds to detail. Working top to bottom which is unusual for me but in this image works best as I can use the same basic value pastels in each level as I move down the work. Putting in the water helped me to keep perspective. Stopped at this point - Tomorrow the foreground with the deepest colors for the trees and shrubbery -I took this photo on a trip in the summer to NY state-we traveled along the hudson-this was the view from a house on the river-I think west point was in the mountain across the way-I'll have to ask ann- Come to think of it i may have done a sketch at the time I should find!

This is an image from earlier this summer on canson black 18 x 25

Finished the image below today - tried to do a looser more abstract version of lotus leaves and flowers compared to the work I put in yesterdays blog-I like the effect-I am trying to move away from the need to copy an image faithfully-and use values, color, to get an image that is equally if not more satisfying. this is on pastel board -not sure of the size but about 17 x 24. Started a landscape that I plan to work in a more monocromatic limited palette-Did a small study on wallis and I have drawn out the image on the larger page! Ready to go tomorrow with the underpainting and then pastel.

I also have several other works I have completed so far this summer:

I have been experimenting with underpainting-this is the first layer of nupastel which i fixed and then worked with the softer pastels in the final version-it gives you a chance to think about color and value and then it is easy to follow with the true colors. :

RRoseman,artist, hand therapist, occupational therapist

I hope to use this space to display my work in progress-any and all feedback, suggestions welcome! I miss not being in a class, but I am working in a studio (not my guestroom) and it gets lonely in there sometimes! I will be back to classes in the fall, but my goal for the summer is to PAINT! I have been taking classes my whole life and spent most of the last 25 years doing watercolors-I took a pastel class a few years ago and had that ahah moment-this is what I love to do-immediate direct painting with color-I love the medium and can't wait to go to my studio (when I am not doing the PRN OT thing) and try new things. So here goes-I have done a several paintings the past few weeks on Canson Black, wallis sanded, colourfix, and pastelboards- I will post my recent work next time.
